from Gwacheon City - Day 1

from Gwacheon City, South Korea to Burlington, North Carolina

I had no idea, but one of the small towns in our county has a Sister City which I learned today is not a joke. It's a real thing and not in name only. The concept of sister cities was started in 1956 by Dwight D. Eisenhower in an effort after World War II to create long lasting positive international connections. Burlington's city sister is Gwacheon City, South Korea - a city on the outskirts of Seoul.

So why do I know this? Because not long ago, our family was asked to host two Gwacheon City students for two weeks during their trip to the United States. While the idea at first seemed a little daunting, we quickly realized that this was a fabulous opportunity.  An opportunity to not only display gracious American hospitality but to make lasting memories and connections while allowing my children to see and learn from students on the other side of the world. My kiddos were so excited to learn about this opportunity.

Audrey created a welcome note in their language for them to find.  They gave her great kudos and were so excited to find it!

Tonight marked the arrival of Hyeonji and Ji Ho, along with the arrival of Snowpocalypse 2017!

After pick up, we headed to our Friday night pizza place and began getting to know each other.

We spent the evening talking, watching a Korean movie they recommended on Netflix and playing several rounds of Crossy Road which they were already very familiar with, and quite good at!

They also very sweetly presented us with gifts - dried teas and some of their favorite foods!

I'm excited for what the next two weeks will bring and I feel quite confident that we will be way more blessed by this experience than we could imagine!

Even the puppy dogs were excited, and incredibly curious, about our new visitors!
